Oil Cleansing for Dry, Mature Skin
Maria AcostaShare
For years, many of us thought that freshly cleansed skin should feel almost squeaky. That tight feeling seemed like proof that the cleanser had done its job.
As my own skin changed, I began to see cleansing differently. I wanted my face to feel clean, but I did not want it to feel stripped, uncomfortable or eager for moisturizer the moment I dried it.
That is what led me to oil cleansing.
What does a cleansing oil do?
A cleansing oil loosens makeup, sunscreen, excess oil and the buildup that settles on our skin throughout the day.
A cleansing oil should do more than move makeup around the face. When a little water is added, a rinseable formula washes away along with the makeup, sunscreen and daily buildup it has loosened.
The result should be skin that feels clean, soft and comfortable rather than coated or overly scrubbed.
Why dry and changing skin may prefer oil cleansing
Many women notice that their skin becomes drier or more delicate with time. A cleanser that once worked beautifully may begin to leave the face feeling tight.
Oil cleansing offers a different experience. Instead of relying on a strong lather, it gently loosens what needs to be removed. The massage also allows the cleanser to move across the face without excessive rubbing.
For dry, mature skin, a cleansing oil can make washing the face feel gentler and more comfortable, without the stripped feeling some cleansers can leave behind.
It can be especially helpful when you want to remove:
- Foundation and other face makeup
- Sunscreen
- Daily dirt and buildup
- Excess oil without creating a stripped feeling
Do you need to cleanse twice?
Not necessarily.
Many oil cleansers are intended as the first half of a double-cleansing routine. You use the oil first and then wash again with a separate facial cleanser.
I wanted something simpler.
I formulated the Calendula & Pecan Facial Cleansing Oil for dry, mature skin to remove makeup and cleanse in one step. Its rinseable formula allows the oil and what it has loosened to wash away with water. For most everyday use, I do not find that a second cleanser is necessary.
Of course, skincare is personal. Someone wearing particularly heavy or waterproof makeup may choose to cleanse again. But double cleansing should be an option—not an automatic requirement.
How I use a cleansing oil
Start with dry hands and a dry face.
- Apply 1/2 to 1 pump of cleansing oil to dry skin.
- Massage it gently over the face, including areas with makeup or sunscreen.
- Add a little water and continue massaging, then rinse thoroughly.
- Rinse thoroughly with comfortably warm water.
You can use a soft, damp cloth if you enjoy that ritual, but there is no need to scrub. Let the formula do the work.
Afterward, pat the skin dry and continue with the rest of your routine—or simply stop there if your skin feels comfortable.
Why I chose pecan oil
Cold-pressed Texas pecan oil is at the heart of M. Carya. I chose it because it creates the kind of rich, elegant skin feel I wanted for my own changing skin.
In the Calendula & Pecan Facial Cleansing Oil, I pair cold-pressed pecan oil with calendula and other thoughtfully selected ingredients to create a cleanser that feels rich on the skin and rinses away with water.
It is a cleanser, but it still feels like care.
A simpler way to wash away the day
A skincare routine does not need more steps simply because more steps are available.
For me, a good evening cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen and the day without leaving my skin feeling punished for being dry. Oil cleansing gives me that balance: an effective cleanse, a beautiful sensory experience and one less product crowding the sink.
That is the kind of simplicity I want M. Carya to offer: fewer steps, thoughtfully formulated products and care that honors skin as it changes.
