Why I Chose Cold-Pressed Pecan Oil

If you've followed M. Carya for a while, you probably know that cold-pressed pecan oil is at the heart of every formula I create.
It is the signature oil in the Calendula & Pecan Cleansing Oil, Tallow & Pecan Balm, and Body Butter Bar, each created with dry, mature, and changing skin in mind.
People sometimes ask why.
After all, there are hundreds of beautiful botanical oils available to skincare formulators. Argan oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, marula oil...the list goes on.
So why build an entire skincare line around pecan oil?
The answer is actually pretty simple.
I didn't choose it because it was trendy.
I chose it because the more I learned, the more it made sense.
I Didn't Start With Marketing
One thing you may not know about me is that I genuinely enjoy research.
Before I make a formula, I spend a lot of time reading scientific papers, cosmetic ingredient references, and formulation texts. I want to understand what an ingredient is, how it's produced, what it's made of, and what role it can realistically play in a skincare product.
That may sound a little unusual, but it's one of my favorite parts of formulation.
When I first began looking into pecan oil, I expected to find lots of information about its use in cosmetics.
Instead, I found something different.
Most of the published research focused on pecan oil as a food oil. Scientists were studying its fatty acids, how different pecan varieties compare, and how processing affects the finished oil.
As I read through that research, I realized something.
The very things food scientists appreciated about cold-pressed pecan oil were also interesting from a skincare perspective.
Your Skin Doesn't Need the Latest Trend
One thing I've noticed over the years is that skincare trends come and go.
Every few months there's another "miracle" ingredient.
I don't formulate that way.
Instead, I ask a quieter question:
What does this ingredient actually contribute to the formula?
That question led me to the natural fatty acids found in pecan oil.
Every botanical oil has its own personality. Some feel light and dry. Others are rich and cushiony. Some absorb quickly, while others leave the skin feeling more protected.
Pecan oil has a combination that I kept coming back to.
Research consistently shows that it contains a generous amount of oleic acid along with a meaningful amount of linoleic acid.
You don't need to memorize those names.
What matters is that together they help explain why pecan oil feels so elegant on dry skin.
More Than Just a Pretty Ingredient
One thing I love about formulation is discovering that nature is often more complex than it first appears.
Pecan oil isn't simply one ingredient.
It's made up of many naturally occurring components working together.
In addition to its fatty acids, cold-pressed pecan oil naturally contains compounds such as tocopherols (forms of vitamin E), phytosterols, squalene, and other plant lipids.
I'm careful not to overstate what those components do.
I'm not interested in making promises that the science doesn't support.
What I appreciate is that cold-pressed pecan oil arrives with much of its natural composition still intact.
To me, that's part of its beauty.
Why "Cold-Pressed" Matters
You've probably noticed that I almost never say simply "pecan oil."
I almost always say cold-pressed pecan oil.
There's a reason.
Cold pressing is a gentle mechanical process that extracts oil without using chemical solvents or extensive refining.
That doesn't mean no heat is ever generated during pressing, but it does mean the oil is processed differently than many highly refined vegetable oils.
For me, that matters.
When I choose a botanical ingredient, I want it to retain as much of its original character as reasonably possible.
Cold pressing helps preserve more of the naturally occurring compounds that make each botanical unique.
Formulas Should Be Intentional
One lesson I've learned as a formulator is that adding more ingredients doesn't automatically create a better product.
Sometimes it simply creates a longer ingredient list.
Instead, I try to make every ingredient earn its place.
When I look at one of my formulas, I want to be able to explain why each ingredient is there.
What does it contribute?
How does it improve the texture?
How does it work with the other ingredients?
Would I miss it if I removed it?
Those are the questions I ask in every formulation.
A Little Advice From One Ingredient Reader to Another
The next time you're shopping for skincare, turn the bottle over.
Instead of reading only the marketing on the front, spend a moment looking at the ingredient list.
Ask yourself:
What are the primary oils in this product?
Do they appear near the top of the ingredient list?
Does the formula seem thoughtfully designed?
Can the company explain why those ingredients were chosen?
You don't have to become a formulator.
But understanding just a little about ingredients can help you become a more confident skincare shopper.
Why I Still Reach for Pecan Oil
Earlier this year, I shared the story of how cold-pressed pecan oil became the heart of M. Carya.
Since then, I've continued researching, reading, and formulating.
If anything, that work has only strengthened my appreciation for this remarkable Texas ingredient. It isn't flashy. It isn't the ingredient that's making headlines on social media this week. But every time I sit down to create a new formula for dry, mature skin, I find myself coming back to it.
Not because it's fashionable. Because after everything I've learned, it still feels like the right choice.
And that's exactly the kind of ingredient I want at the heart of M. Carya.
