Shea butter is a rich botanical fat obtained from the kernels of the shea tree, which grows across parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It contains a high proportion of stearic and oleic acids, along with smaller amounts of other naturally occurring fatty acids and plant compounds. In skincare, shea butter functions primarily as an emollient, helping soften the skin, reduce the feeling of dryness, and improve comfort.

We use naturally refined shea butter in selected M. Carya formulas. Refining reduces much of the strong, earthy aroma and natural color associated with unrefined shea butter, giving it a milder scent and a more neutral appearance. This allows the character of our other ingredients to remain noticeable while shea butter continues to contribute richness, softness, and structure to the finished product.

Shea butter has a smooth, cushiony texture that works especially well in balms, body butter bars, and other water-free formulations. It helps soften harder ingredients such as waxes and brittle butters, making a solid product feel more comfortable as it moves across the skin.

On the skin, shea butter leaves a protective, conditioning layer that can help reduce moisture loss and improve the feel of dry or flaky areas. Because it is richer than many liquid oils, we balance it carefully with lighter emollients to avoid an unnecessarily heavy finish.
