Kokum butter is a firm botanical fat obtained from the seed kernels of Garcinia indica, a fruit-bearing tree native to regions of India. It is naturally rich in stearic and oleic acids, a fatty acid profile that helps explain its hard, brittle texture at room temperature and its ability to soften when warmed.

In cosmetic formulas, kokum butter functions primarily as an emollient and structuring ingredient. It helps soften and condition the skin while adding body and firmness to balms, bars, and other water-free products. Compared with softer butters, kokum butter can strengthen a solid formula without adding as much softness or heaviness. This makes it useful for balancing richer oils and butters when the goal is a nourishing product with a more refined finish.

We use kokum butter in selected M. Carya formulas to support shape, controlled application, and a smooth skin feel. In a body butter bar or balm, it helps the product remain solid in its container while still releasing comfortably when rubbed across warm skin.
