Candelilla wax is a plant-derived wax obtained from the candelilla shrub, a desert plant native to northern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. The plant naturally develops a waxy coating that helps it endure hot, dry conditions. After the wax is separated and prepared for use, it becomes a firm, brittle material commonly used to add structure to cosmetic products.

Candelilla wax is composed largely of long-chain hydrocarbons, along with wax esters, fatty acids, alcohols, sterols, and resins. Its exact composition can vary somewhat depending on the source and processing. In an anhydrous formula, it can increase firmness, help a balm or bar hold its shape, and contribute a smooth surface and subtle gloss.

We use candelilla wax in selected M. Carya balms and body butter bars to support the structure and performance of the finished product. Because it is a relatively hard wax, a small change in the amount used can noticeably affect firmness, payoff, and glide. We balance it carefully with plant oils, butters, and other structuring ingredients so the product remains stable while still feeling comfortable during application.
