Showing Up Again: Learning to Be Seen After Years Behind a Screen

Maria Acosta

Starting a company means more than creating a product. It means allowing yourself to be seen.
And for me — after years spent behind a keyboard during the COVID years, working in tech and managing projects and dashboards — that’s been the hardest part.

I used to measure success by how smoothly client implementations went. I became comfortable being the invisible project manager who made things work quietly in the background. Starting M. Carya changed that. It asked me to step out from behind the laptop and show my face — not just as a founder, but as myself. For the last five years, it felt safer to stay unseen.

I posted my first video on social media this week. It was difficult to come face-to-face with my own image and voice captured on my iPhone. Recording myself and sharing why I love formulating skincare for you felt far more vulnerable than managing any project plan ever did.

Every post I share is a small act of courage — I actually have to learn to speak authentically again after years of typing.

I’m working to build something beautiful that I’m proud to share publicly. Each morning, I ask what my next steps should be. Some days I focus on new ways to connect with people; other days, I return to the formulation table. Every day, I’m grateful for the chance to create something that invites women to feel deeply cared for in their own skin.

Thank you for letting me be part of your stories.
You remind me why being seen matters.
